Website During my studies of biology I worked on the life cycles of tropical parasites of cattle, a fascinating theme that dragged me into parasitology. The Dept. of Molecular Parasitology (Institute of Biology) of the Humboldt-University was founded in 1995 and builds on the longstanding tradition that parasitology has in Berlin. Our research concentrates on immunobiology and molecular biology of parasitic nematodes, of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni and on intestinal protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria. We dissect mechanisms and characterize components that are involved in protective host immune responses and immune evasion of the parasites. Such information will facilitate the development of vaccines and new drugs against parasite infections and at the same time allow insight into the stunning complexity and into the evolution of host-parasite-relationships. We teach the full range of subjects from classical to molecular parasitology and combine these subjects with infection biology in a broader, interdisciplinary sense. |
